Many companies have discovered the benefits
of "trying out" an employee prior
to making a permanent offer. Contract-to-hire
arrangements have a high rate of success for
several reasons:
The
employee works hard to succeed, knowing
that the contract period is essentially
a probation period. This motivates an employee
to get up to speed on job duties quickly.
Risk to the company is minimized. There
is no long term commitment up front. If the
employee doesn't work out, the contract just
expires or is terminated. Since the person
was never an actual employee of the company,
any risk of a claim of wrongful termination,
etc. is removed.
Often times, on-the-job performance may
indicate a change of role for the employee.
That can lead to a more appropriate offer,
or perhaps an offer for a different position
in the company. That is a lot easier than
hiring someone and then discovering
that he or she would be better suited for
a different role, and convincing them to change.
